Chinese Medicine
With more than 3,000 years of empirical documentation and practice, Chinese
medicine continues to be a highly effective treatment for numerous diseases and
common ailments.
Traditional Chinese medicine is based on a rich, complex set of theories about
Qi (loosely translated as “energy”) and Xue (blood). Today, the most common
clinical diagnosis is a combination of excess and deficiency of these vital
substances. Acupuncture is the painless insertion of fine needles into various
points on the body to stimulate the flow of Qi and Xue.
It is the role of the practitioner of Chinese medicine to determine how the
organs reflect excess and deficiency and to work with the patient in choosing a
treatment plan to help restore balance. There are many theories in the diagnosis
and treatment using Chinese medicine and it is beneficial to find a practitioner
that you resonate with.
The
World Health Organization endorses the
use of Chinese medicine, and the
National Institutes of Health (NIH) offers a
long list of diseases successfully treated by acupuncture.
Published clinical trials and research on the efficacy of Chinese Medicine can
be found on
PubMed Central, an
online repository for medical research managed by the NIH.
Complementary Medicine
Chinese medicine does not need Western medicine to be effective. But many of
us come to Chinese medicine with Western diagnoses or treatments, and a wide
variety of wants and needs.
Some seek out acupuncture and herbs as an alternative to Western medicine – to
stave off the need for surgery for example – or as an adjunctive medicine,
possibly to help alleviate the side-affects of Western pharmaceuticals.
I approach health and healing within a paradigm of
complementary medicine, believing we can leverage the benefits of different
disciplines to create a wholly unique plan for treatment. I believe in a future
of fully integrated medicine.
I partner with you to help guide you in your own well-rounded approach,
building a holistic plan that targets your needs and integrates complementary
practitioners when necessary, including medical doctors (MDs), physical and
massage therapists, chiropractors, nutritionists, and those representing other
modalities. I also refer out as necessary.
When appropriate, our clinic may refer you to western laboratory for testing
to analyze liver function, blood count and other vital clinical testing.
